About this cartoon: Housing prices in California are crushing to most would-be buyers, and rents are just as bad. A report stated that another 5 percent hike in apartment rents in Los Angeles could drive an additional 2,000 people into homelessness. Many people pay 40 percent, 50 percent or even more of their total income on housing in the state's coastal metro areas, far in excess of most recommendations for how much to spend on keeping a roof over one's head.
